Delicious Food but Forgetable Decor.
. . . after deciding on barbecue for dinner, I started doing some research on the internet for local barebeque establishments in Birmingham. I was impressed with this particular restaurant's website, costasfamousbbq.c0m, and persuaded my reluctant partner to dine here. We arrived on a Saturday evening, 01/20/2007 at approximately 7:30 p.m. For a Saturday evening during peak dining hours, the restaurant was relatively quiet.
The restaurant looked as if it was once a fast food dining establishment with the obligatory drive through. The decor was tired and dated and the cleanliness was questionable. There was an "all-you-can-eat" buffet for $8.99. I cannot recall exactly what was on the buffet but made a mental note that the selection was decent. I ordered the chopped bbq turkey plate for $8.99 that included 2 sides. I opted for the collard greens and black eyed peas. My timid partner ordered a hamburger and french fries. The turkey was moist and had a delicate smoky flavor. The black eyed peas were nice and salty with bits of ham in every bite. It had almost that mush like consistency that I personally love. The collard greens were fork tender and had an earthy flavor to them. I also ordered a side of fried okra which were wonderful. The batter wasn't too heavy and not too soggy. I had my heart set on having a piece of red velvet cake for desert, since it was listed as one of the many desert offerings. I was heart broken. They were out.
The overall experience was a positive one. The food I ordered was delicious and affordable. I was disappointed that there was no more red velvet cake since that was one of the final deciding factors on eating here compared to other barbeque restaurants. If you are not concerend with ambiance and are looking for a no frills straight forward restaurant that serves good barbecue, you will enjoy this place.
great value. Loved the food. Awesome service. Best BBQ in Birmingham. Wonderful sauce. I can't wait to get some in the grocery store.
