In Short
Founded in Oregon circa 1953, this simply-furnished spot owes its success to its creative menu and fresh ingredients. Batters are made on the premises; a special "sourdough starter" keeps treats from tasting overly sweet. Patrons choose from eggs, waffles, crepes and oven-baked omelets, as well as signature plates like blueberry pancakes (served with or without compote), giant cinnamon-glazed apple pancakes, thin and chewy "49-ers" and the air-filled, lemon-and-sugar-topped "Dutch Baby."

This is the most wonderful pancake house but don't let the name fool you. Try the french toast and you will forget the pancakes although they are good and plentiful also. The french toast is homemade and a full order is about 5 pieces. But if you want to substitute it on another breakfast meal item you can just get half an order and be full. Meats are tender and tasty. Staff is friendly. Saturday morning is also packed.

If you are looking for breakfast this is the place to go. You get more than one can eat and for the price it is great. I had the french toast and sausage. The french toast had amaretto cream and it just made you close your eyes and let the taste just take you to another place. I looked at the plates around me and noticed that everyones plate was filled to capacity. These are huge plates I tell you. I saw an omelette that could fit in the Genius Book Of World Records. Well I may be over dramatizing a little, but you get the picture. When in Birmingham as I was I would truly recommend you go to this place.

The food is GREAT, the people are GREAT, and the decor is simply 5 Pts. South. With original artwork by "Buttermilk J", you not only get a lesson in Southern manners, but Birmingham Landmarks and the ONLY place in town you can dine beneath the portrait of "Buttermilk Elvis"! And they have a killer ham and cheese sandwich for lunch too.
