Birminghams Most Annoying Staff. Worst dining experience of my life. The hostess did not give us a menu ostensibly because she was annoyed at us for not wanting to sit less than half a foot away from other people when there were plenty of open tables not next to other people in the dining room. After waiting without menus for half an hour we complained to our waiter. He explained it was because it was the end of the day and everyone was cranky. When we got there it was two hours from closing. He said they go through a lot of hostesses. Then he proceeded to brag to us about his jewelry, his car, his investments, and his new house from when we ordered through the entire meal. We went there because it is usually quick and we didn't want to be there long. This brunch took us 2.5 hours. No lie.
Made-to-order breakfasts---including over a dozen unique flapjacks---stack the odds in this restaurant's favor..
In Short
Founded in Oregon circa 1953, this simply-furnished spot owes its success to its creative menu and fresh ingredients. Batters are made on the premises; a special "sourdough starter" keeps treats from tasting overly sweet. Patrons choose from eggs, waffles, crepes and oven-baked omelets, as well as signature plates like blueberry pancakes (served with or without compote), giant cinnamon-glazed apple pancakes, thin and chewy "49-ers" and the air-filled, lemon-and-sugar-topped "Dutch Baby."
The French toast is heavenly. If you are looking for breakfast this is the place to go. You get more than one can eat and for the price it is great. I had the french toast and sausage. The french toast had amaretto cream and it just made you close your eyes and let the taste just take you to another place. I looked at the plates around me and noticed that everyones plate was filled to capacity. These are huge plates I tell you. I saw an omelette that could fit in the Genius Book Of World Records. Well I may be over dramatizing a little, but you get the picture. When in Birmingham as I was I would truly recommend you go to this place.
Great Food - Great Folks!. The food is GREAT, the people are GREAT, and the decor is simply 5 Pts. South. With original artwork by "Buttermilk J", you not only get a lesson in Southern manners, but Birmingham Landmarks and the ONLY place in town you can dine beneath the portrait of "Buttermilk Elvis"! And they have a killer ham and cheese sandwich for lunch too.
