I have lived in their apartment complex, Breckenwood, in Hueytown since May of 2012 and there is a serious roach and insect problem that they have failed to address. If you are thinking about moving here, please keep on looking!! I mean this seriously. Since I have been in the apartments, I have sprayed about 6 times, and so have they, but not much luck in getting rid of my problem. I contacted the Health department regarding the bug infestation, and they came out last month, and of course the roaches weren't at their finest. They indicated though that they had also come out last year 2011 around the same time due to a tenant complaining about bug problems. I have spoken with several of the tenants, 12 to be exact, and all are experiencing the same issues. Some of the tenants who have been in the complex for years finally gave up on trying to get rid of the roaches because they were never successful. Many of the tenants think that you're going to have bugs anyways. I mean, really people!!! No one should be forced to live with insects. Roaches are just one of the issues, but many of the tenants are having problems with spiders, bees, wasps, meal worms, and water bugs. It lets you know that the complex is not effectively spraying on the inside or the outside.
To top it off, on Monday, October 1, 2012, to be exact, OF ALL DAYS, all of the tenants received a letter indicating that the children are not allowed to play in the parking lot or the breezeways or it could lead to termination of the lease. I can understand children not playing in the breezeways, but a wide open parking lot that's not exposed to thru traffic other than the tenants who I have noticed are very careful to watch out for children when they are outdoors playing. I could be wrong, but I thought according to tenant law that if you came up with a new rule/amendment to the lease that all tenants should agree in writing that going forth they accept this change, especially if its something like this. I happen to have children and it appears to me that this change directly affects people with children. Its simply a nice/nasty way of saying that children are not allowed to go outside and play while they are home. In other words, not a kid-friendly complex!! I was told that if you want your kids to play take them to the park and play. I see that the main objective is to keep it quiet for those who don't have kids. It's housing discrimination at it finest. You can't single a certain group of people out,in this case - people with kids, and treat them differently.
After speaking with a lady at the leasing office about the letter received, and the bug issue, she said, nastily, that it was obvious I wasn't happy and that I could go ahead and end my lease with a 30 day notice. It didn't hurt my feelings at all. I am totally okay with this. Potential renters - before you do, DONT!! Penn Properties are undercover SLUM LORDS. They are your friends (right) as long as you dont have an issue, but once you do that automatically changes the landlord-tenant relationship. Just for the record, I will never rent from these people again!! Not kid friendly or roach- free living!!
Refrigerator Meltdown – I've lived in one of their apt complexes since September of 2008. Our freezer stopped keeping things cold and the repair men came out and told me that it was the way we had things arranged in our freezer. So we've kept things stacked the way they suggested and we had no problems after that until the day before yesterday.
Our freezer went out, so I called at around 4:30 yesterday and asked if someone could come out as soon as possible. I arrived home last night to find that our entire refrigerator was no longer keeping things cold--that in fact it seemed to be blowing HOT air.
It got to be noon today and no one had arrived. Some things were still salvageable in the bottom drawer, but most everything was spoiled and completely beyond saving. I called again and was told that someone would be out at two or three.
I called again at 3:17, after the rest of the food--$200 dollars worth of groceries--had completely ruined, and was told that they were on their way.
It is now 4:03 pm, and I have yet to even see the repair van, and there is no way that I can get in touch with someone besides through the telephone and it goes straight to their voicemail, because apparently they close at four.
I am livid AND hungry.
